Washington Sundar is a left-handed batsman and a right-arm off-break bowler. On 6 October 2016, Sundar made his first-class debut for Tamil Nadu in the 2016–17 Ranji Trophy.
He made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka on 13 December 2017. In the following month, Negi made his T20I debut also against Sri Lanka. Negi became the youngest player to debut for India in T20Is at the age of 18.
He was bought by Rising Pune Supergiant as a replacement for Ravichandran Ashwin in 2017 for the 2017 Indian Premier League. In the match between Mumbai Indian and Pune Supergiants, he picked 3 wickets for 16 runs in the IPL 2017 and won the Man of the Match award for his excellent performance. He set the record for the best bowling figures in an IPL final.
In 2018, he was purchased by Royal Challengers Bangalore for the 2018 IPL auction.
His sister Shailja Sunder is also an international cricket player.
