Shimron Hetmyer plays for the West Indies cricket team. He was appointed captain of the West Indies squad for the 2016 Under-19 Cricket World Cup in December 2015. Hetmyer was named one of the five prominent stars in men’s cricket by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 2018.
He made his Twenty20 (T20) debut for the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the 2016 Caribbean Premier League (CPL). He was given a red-ball contract by Cricket West Indies (CWI) in October 2018 for the 2018–19 season.
He made his Test debut for the West Indies against Pakistan on 21 April 2017 and made his ODI debut for the West Indies against New Zealand on 20 December 2017. He has been called up to the West Indies Twenty20 International (T20I) squad for their upcoming series against New Zealand. On January 1, 2018, he made his T20I debut for the West Indies against New Zealand.
He scored his first ODI century against the United Arab Emirates at the Old Hararians ground in Harare on March 6, 2018, in the 2018 Cricket World Cup Qualifier. Hetmyer was appointed man of the match after the West Indies won by 60 runs.
He was named to the West Indies squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup in April 2019. He was called one of five exciting newcomers to the Cricket World Cup by the International Cricket Council (ICC). Hetmyer reached 1,000 runs in one-day internationals on June 17, 2019, against Bangladesh.
