- Ricky’s dad left Canada for England when the war was raging. It was during a blackout when he had met Ricky’s mother. Over time, they had chosen to make Whitley, a suburb of Reading, their permanent home.
- After finishing high school, he took a year off during which he worked as a gardener at the University of Reading.
- From an early age on, he was fascinated by the world around him, particularly insects, plants, and other natural phenomena. As a result, he planned to enrol in biology classes at UCL (UCL). Two weeks after enrolling, though, he decided to switch majors and study philosophy instead.
