Murugan Ashwin plays for Tamil Nadu. In the 2015–16 Vijay Hazare Trophy, he made his List A debut on December 11, 2015. In the 2015–16 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he made his Twenty20 debut on January 2, 2016.
The Rising Pune Supergiants paid 4.5 crores for him at the 2016 Indian Premier League auction, which was 45 times his original base price of 10 lakhs. For one crore in February 2017, he was purchased by the Delhi Daredevils for the 2017 Indian Premier League. In the 2018 IPL auction, he was purchased by the Royal Challengers Bangalore. In the player auction for the 2019 Indian Premier League, he was purchased by Kings XI Punjab in December 2018.
