  • To help support his family, he began selling Christmas cards and newspapers with his older brother when he was nine years old.
  • DeJoria served in the US Navy for two years, aboard the USS Hornet. After that, he worked as a janitor, encyclopedia salesman, and insurance salesperson, among other things.
  • DeJoria began her career in the hair care industry as an entry-level employee at Redken Laboratories. He got let go from this job. He founded John Paul Mitchell Systems in 1980 with the help of stylist Paul Mitchell and a $700 loan, all while living in a 20-year-old Rolls-Royce.
