- To help support his family, he began selling Christmas cards and newspapers with his older brother when he was nine years old.
- DeJoria served in the US Navy for two years, aboard the USS Hornet. After that, he worked as a janitor, encyclopedia salesman, and insurance salesperson, among other things.
- DeJoria began her career in the hair care industry as an entry-level employee at Redken Laboratories. He got let go from this job. He founded John Paul Mitchell Systems in 1980 with the help of stylist Paul Mitchell and a $700 loan, all while living in a 20-year-old Rolls-Royce.
- DeJoria has worked as an executive producer and actor in the film industry. He appeared in the 2008 comedy You Don’t Mess with the Zohan as himself, as well as in The Big Tease as the fake John Paul Mitchell. DeJoria also made a cameo appearance in the second season of the Showtime series Weeds.
- He served as a guest investor on the ABC reality show Shark Tank on November 1, 2013, replacing series regular Robert Herjavec. He is the show’s third-richest “shark” of all time, after series regular Mark Cuban and fellow “guest shark” Sir Richard Branson, with a net worth of US$3.1 billion in 2017.
- DeJoria and business partner Jonathan Kendrick co-founded ROKiT Group in 2018. Since launching ROKiT Group in 2018, DeJoria and Kendrick have added products like ROKiT Phones, ROKiT Telemedicine, ROKiT Drinks, and more.
