Basil Thampi is a right-handed batsman and right-arm medium pace bowler. On February 6, 2015, Thampi made his first-class debut for Kerala in the 2014–15 Ranji Trophy. In February 2017, he was purchased for $85 lakhs by the Gujarat Lions team for the 2017 Indian Premier League (IPL). Thampi won the “Emerging Player Award” during the 2017 IPL season.
He was included in India’s Twenty20 International (T20I) squad in November 2017, but he did not play in the series against Sri Lanka. In the 2018 IPL auction, he was purchased by the Sunrisers Hyderabad in January 2018. In July 2018, he was appointed to the India Blue squad for the 2018–19 Duleep Trophy, which required him to travel through Kerala’s floods to begin the season. He was named to the India Blue team’s squad for the 2019–20 Duleep Trophy in August 2019.
Thampi has a fast bowling pace of over 140 kmph and is known for consistently bowling yorkers . Thampi has stated that he “got [his] yorkers from tennis ball cricket.”
