Aaliyah died in an airplane accident in the Bahamas on August 25, 2001, when the badly overloaded plane she was travelling in crashed shortly after takeoff, killing all nine people on board. The pilot was later discovered to have cocaine and alcohol traces in his body, and he was unqualified to fly the plane assigned to the flight. Aaliyah’s family later filed a wrongful death case against Blackhawk International Airways, the aircraft’s operator, which was settled out of court.
