More Information About

Milkha Singh was an athlete from India. He is the only athlete to win gold in the 400-meter race at both the Asian and Commonwealth Games. He also won gold medals in the Asian Games in 1958 and 1962. He competed for India in the 1956 Summer Olympics, the 1960 Summer Olympics, and the 1964 Summer Olympics, Tokyo. Singh also received the Padma Shri India’s fourth-highest civilian honor, in recognition of his sporting achievements.

Singh’s time in the 1960 Olympics 400m final on a cinder track set a national record that held until 1998 when Paramjit Singh set a new national record of 45.70 seconds on a synthetic track with fully automatic timing. Singh’s Olympic time of 45.6 seconds was hand-timed, but an electronic system at the time estimated his record to be 45.73 seconds.

The Race of My Life, Singh’s autobiography (co-written with his daughter Sonia Sanwalka), was published in 2013. Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, a 2013 biographical film on Singh’s life, was inspired by the novel.
