Shubman Gill plays for Punjab in domestic cricket. In late 2017, he made his first-class debut for Punjab against Bengal in the 2017–18 Ranji Trophy, scoring a half-century, and then 129 runs against Services in the next match.
On February 25, 2017, he made his List A debut for Punjab in the 2016–17 Vijay Hazare Trophy. On November 17, 2017, he made his first-class debut for Punjab in the 2017–18 Ranji Trophy. Later that month, while batting for Punjab against Services in his second first-class match, he scored his first century.
In the 2018 IPL auction, he was purchased by the Kolkata Knight Riders for 1.8 crore (US$250,000). On April 14, 2018, he made his Twenty20 debut for Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2018 Indian Premier League. The International Cricket Council (ICC) called him one of eight players to watch ahead of the 2019 Indian Premier League tournament in March 2019. In the 2019 Indian Premier League, he was named Emerging Player of the Tournament.
