Kane Williamson is currently the captain of the New Zealand national team in all formats. In December 2007, Williamson made his first-class cricket debut. In the same year, he made his U-19 debut against a visiting Indian U-19 team and was appointed captain of the New Zealand U-19 team for the 2008 U-19 Cricket World Cup.

He led New Zealand to the final of the  2019 Cricket World Cup, winning the  Player of the Tournament award in the process. He passed Steve Smith and Virat Kohli as the world’s top-ranked Test batsmen on December 31, 2020, with a 890 Test batting ranking. He was nominated for the Sir Garfield Sobers Award for ICC Male Cricketer of the Decade as well as the Sir Garfield Sobers Award for Test Cricketer of the Decade.

Williamson was signed by the IPL’s Sunrisers Hyderabad for US$96,500 on February 6, 2015. In the 2016 season, he was a member of the Sunrisers Hyderabad team that won the IPL. He was re-signed by the team for the 2017 Indian Premier League. He was retained by the Sunrisers Hyderabad for US$460,500 in the 2018 IPL Auction. On March 29, 2018, he was appointed Sunrisers Hyderabad captain, succeeding David Warner. Sunrisers Hyderabad finished second after Chennai Super Kings defeated them by 8 wickets in the final, and Williamson was awarded the Orange Cap for scoring the most runs (735) in the 2018 IPL season. Cricbuzz called him to the IPL XI of the tournament.

Williamson was named as the new captain of the Sunrisers Hyderabad in May 2021, during the mid-season of the 2021 IPL, replacing David Warner, who had only won one of the team’s first seven games.
