- JYP Entertainment accepted him as a trainee in 2004 when his mother noticed he was spending more time dancing than studying, so she encouraged him to audition there.
- In 2008, he appeared in Mnet’s dancing reality show Hot Blood Men, which documented the intense training process of 12 trainees who were to form a boy band called One Day, which they later split 2PM.
- 2PM’s lead singer, Jay, was voted the most popular by fans in Hot Blood Men, and he became the band’s leader after the competition.

Controversy
- In September of 2009, he became embroiled in a controversy regarding comments he made on his MySpace page about Korea dating back to 2005. It wasn’t until Korean media translated his comments into their native language that the negative articles about him began to circulate, and he issued an apology for his forgotten words and expressed shame over them. He also explained the loneliness he felt during his early training days in an alien land.
- Jay’s future as a member of 2PM was in doubt following the scandal, however on September 7, 2009, JYP Entertainment’s president declared he will remain a member of the band.
- The following September, Jay announced that he was leaving the band and returning to the United States, where he grew up.
